Ok, back to the burgers

Apparently it is National Burger Day. So I guess that means I need to get a burger. As you know, I've been trying burgers from Texas Monthly's 50 Best Burgers in TX list. I've had five of the Austin burgers so far. Which one should I get tonight?:

12. Cover 3, Austin, Chop-House Burger (With Cheese and Bacon)

16. Max’s Wine Dive, Austin, Houston, Kobe Beef Burger
30. Roaring Fork, Austin, Half Ass Burger

Oh, and beer too, this is a beer blog after all.

Texas Best Burger - Part 3

Remember when I said I am going to eat my way through all of Texas Monthly’s 50 BEST HAMBURGERS IN TEXAS? Well I am still working on it. It's been awhile, but I am back at it.

It is my pleasure to introduce you to Burger Tex II's Bulgogi Burger. She's sure aint pretty, but she's damn tasty. Ok, damn tasty is a bit much, she's tasty. And spicy. I had them make it a 2 out of 3, spicewise. From Texas Monthly:
The tender beef has been audaciously marinated in soy sauce, garlic, and sesame oil, but what really makes it unique is that it’s thinly sliced rather than ground...The bulgogi sauce is a hot, coral-colored blend featuring roasted garlic and onions.
Sofia couldn't handle the spice and got a normal burger. Boring. The Bulgogi burger is good, but it is not what I am looking for in a burger. Sofia's boring burger was actually much better. And she made it better with the addition of avocado. That girl is a genius! Even though the Bulgogi did not deliver for me, the korean spiciness was nice. I can't believe this was so high on the list (#14). The search continues....

As far as I know, Burger Tex does not serve beer. Luckily I had Chris' spicy Holiday homebrew to sip on. It didn't really go well with the burger (I think the spices were clashing), but it made a nice dessert.

Texas Best Burger - Part 2

Parkside for dinner. Good news, their beer selection has drastically improved. It could still use more work, but it's definitely better than before. I had a Affligem Blond with appetizers (oysters, crab salad, bone marrow with herb salad), and a Old Rasputin with my burger.

Cheeseburger and fries. I actually split this with Sofia, since we had so many appetizers. Tasty for sure. A nice fresh ground meat flavor. The only complaint I have is the saltiness. I drank tons of water throughout dinner, but still felt dehydrated after having the burger and fries. Too far with the salt guys, take it down a notch.

On the Texas Monthly 50 Best Burgers of Texas list this is one notch above Black Sheep Lodge. The restaurants are much different. The burgers are both good, but I think I give the edge to the Black Sheep burger.

Texas Best Burger - Part 1

Stopped in Black Sheep Lodge last Friday. No more free beer, but it’s still worth a visit. I am slowly making my way through Texas Monthly’s list of 50 best burgers in Texas. Very slowly, since this is the first one I have had from the list.

We split two burgers. That’s a pound of burger, plenty for three people. The regular one (Black Sheep Burger) and the buffalo (Black Buffalo Burger) one (the actual burger that made the list). Every joint in Austin seems to have a buffalo/blue cheese burger, which is fine with me. I love ‘em. Both were indeed good, the Buffalo was my favorite.

The fries were tasty too. I prefer regular fries, but the sweet potato fries were enjoyable.

Now, onto the beer. The most important factor. That’s why you are here, right? They had a decent selection. Far better than most burger joints. I had a Brooklyn Lager. If every burger place had only Brooklyn Lager on tap, I’d be happy. But a nice selection is always appreciated.

My wife and sister also liked the Buffalo burger the best. And Santiago pretty much slept the whole time and was only groped by four drunk women. He is good bar baby.

1 down, 49 to go.
