Want some Westvleteren?

Who doesn't, right? I had one bottle of Westy 12 when I was in Belgium in 2007. Not sure why I only bought one. I should have bought ten and ten of the other varieties. There are various methods of obtaining this beer over the interweb. Now a new (cheaper?) way has emerged. Beernews.org fills us in.

Beer Flashback #2

This flashback come from before I had any blogs: October 2004. Our visit to Brooklyn Brewery.



I am going to say this, but I am not sure if I am correct: Brooklyn Brewery was my first ever brewery visit, unless you count Anheuser Busch at the Busch Gardens in Tampa. These pictures suck.

The Brooklyn Brewery tour is basically: walk into one room, this is this, this is that, now go have a beer. At least, that is how i remember it. The Brooklyn Brown Ale was good as ever. You are supposed to get one beer, but you can pretty much continue walking up and getting more (back then).

Flying Dog is 20 and in full on bitch mode!

Have not been a fan of most their beers, but they've put some great ones out. This could be one of them. Hopefully.

Beer Flashback #1

Who does not like reminiscing? Who does not like beer? And that is what this "series" is all about. That and an easy way to get up more content. But it's new, well new for you. This will mostly be old posts from before I started this blog, from my other blog and mostly when we were living in New York.

Barcade is a sick bar. They have great beer. And old skool video games, like Tapper and Ms. Pacman.
















Sam Calagione was there. He is the owner of Dogfish Head and he is sort of one of my heroes. I played him in darts. I beat him and won a hat. We high fived, WOW!
















Cristy and Greg were there also, but we left pretty much as soon as they showed up.

The Future of Beer Bars? Not Likely.

Whilst doing some work research I came across these photos of the wine bar in the St. Regis Hotel. I can't believe I have not heard or read about this before. Obviously, wine bars are not my thing, but think of the beery implications. It is like a giant iphone app (I am thinking Beer Cloud) projected on to your bar or table. This would be interesting to see in a beer bar. But really it's just a novelty. I could not imagine this going on in a place like the Draught House, maybe Flying Saucer. Any place with this swanky action is not going to want me taking up a bar stool.

A sort of sad story

3 Fonteinen has decided to pack it in, as far as brewing lambics goes. They will continue to blend lambics and are starting a distillery as well. So it is not all sad news.

I am gonna be there. Not as a homebrewer, but as a "judge." Anyone else?

You are receiving this message because, as I know that you are skilled homebrew masters, I would like to invite you to participate in the first annual San Francisco Brewoff 2009. The competition will take place on 7 November in Dolores Park, San Francisco and participation is gratis. You will only be expected to bring a minimum of 9, 24 oz. bottles of your entry beer and whatever food you would like to bring. Currently the themed food is BBQ Ribs.

And what is in it for you??
Well, only a fantastic time in the park, good food, the opportunity to measure your beer up against other good beers in a thorough manner, bragging rights if you win and possibly another award for winning.

Why am I sending you this now for a party happening in November?
Since is will likely take about 6 weeks to brew your entry, you should start
preparing now.

What are the rules?
Since each beer must be measured by the same methods we have a couple of rules.

All brewers will brew the same beer. This time the beer will be CALIFORNIA COMMON!

All beers should be bottled instead of kegged and beer should arrive in standard 24 oz bottles. Bottles should not be labeled in any way. Of course, you will get all the bottles back after the event.

As I mentioned before, you should bring at least 9, 24 oz. bottles but feel free to bring more.

Teams are allowed

What do I do now?
Think about it, check your calendar and mark it appropriately. Write me back by 11 September to let me know that you will be participating and who is in your team if you have a team. Seek and find your favorite California Common recipe and get brewing.
