Roggenbier is mashed with a relatively high amount (25%) of German rye malt. It's characterized by a slight refreshing tartness, low hop bitterness, and a very slight fruitiness from the special German ale yeast. Roggenbier is extremely drinkable and is a great beer for the summer. 4.8% abv.

HB 2436 /SB 1575

What would HB 2436/SB 1575 do? It would let breweries of a certain size (under 75k barrels) to sell directly to the consumers. It would allow these breweries to have real tasting rooms (bars) selling beer for off-premises and/or on-premises quaffing.

Earlier today, I sat down with a Chip McElroy of Live Oak to discuss HB 2436/SB 1575. Actually we just talked on the phone. I was sitting down, not sure about Chip.

Chip said that this is primarily a marketing issue. It would be a great tool for reaching

potential new customers and helping test possible new products. Sales would be made face to face, with the people who actually made the beer. In addition to the marketing aspect, the bill would open up a new revenue stream, which does not currently exist. Still though, most of their beer would not be sold at the brewery. The vast majority of sales would still be made at third party outlets, via wholesalers. And this, Chip pointed out, is a very important feature of the bill: Allows for sales at breweries without threatening the three tier system. Similar bills have been introduced in the past two sessions, but Chip and co. have a lot of confidence in this "tight, clean" bill

2010: Best and Worst

Best: Truthfully, I can't think of the "best beer" I had in 2010. I know I had some good ones. But none really pop into my head as the best . . . Peche Mortel was amazing back in January. Ohhhh and Jubel...too good. Sierra Nevada's four 30th anniversary beers were all solid, the stout and barleywine being my favorite. (512) Whiskey Barrel Double Pecan Porter was delicious most of the time. My bottle was perfect. Ok, now I remember, THE BEER is Grand Teton Double Vision Dopplebock. INSANE, no that is too far, it was close to insane - perfectly delicious.

I will also note my great pleasure in seeing the openings of our newest breweries: Thirsty Planet, Jester King (loved that Black Metal Stout last week) and Black Star. And it was exciting to follow the development of breweries like Hops and Grain, South Austin Brewing and Circle Brewing.


Now the worst: Live Oak Primus. It pains me to say this. I used to love this beer. I was so looking forward to it this year. I could not get enough of it last year. This year, after several pints, I'm just not feeling it. Something is off, it's leaving me flat, unaffected. I only include this as my worst beer, because it did not live up to it's past mighty form. Maybe I changed. I'll keep chasing the dragon though. I want my Primus passion back.

ABW: Live Oak Brewing

Ok, ok, I had the greatest intentions of laying out each the breweries "best" events. As you can see I am a little behind. ABW starts in a few days, let's do this. Up now, Live Oak. For Live Oak's full schedule go here.





This event at Alamo looks like it will be one of the highlights of ABW. Good food. Great movie. Killer beer. Although eating at Alamo is always tricky, it's dark....depdending on what you eat, you have to awkwardly shift forward in your seat....don't get me started. But the food is really good, even if I can't see it.

I saw this somewhere last week on twitter. But I saw it on BA this morning and jogged my memory. Had a few pints of this when I first came to town and then it disappeared. I liked it. More than their IPA, that is for sure (hater alert!).

Live Oak Brewing Co. and the Big Friends Network will be hosting the Texas vs. Missouri Watching Party on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at the brewery.

The kick-off time for the missouri game will be decided sometime after Saturday's (Oct. 17) Texas/ou sux! game. In all likelihood, the missouri game will start at 7 p.m., after we beat OU this week (or at 2:30 p.m. should the unthinkable happen). We will be set up at 2:30 p.m. to watch all day until the Texas game at 7 p.m.. Other unfortunate possibilities shall not be further discussed on this forum. Consult your local listings.

As usual, there will be lots of tasty treats from Smokey Denmark and Live Oak beer. We'll have the game on a couple of projectors and it should be a good time.

Be sure to bring a chair and whatever charms and idols are your usual accoutrements. And dont forget to bring a donation for the Big Friends Network. They do good work and their email missive follows.

UPDATE: Yes, it is a fundraiser for Big Friends, and it's a "pass-the-hat" kind of deal. I'm guessing that when the email initially went out the time of the game was still unknown (it could have been at 2:30 or at 7pm). Now that we know the game is on for 7pm, we'd appreciate if it folks would show up 6-6:30-ish.

Oktoberfest Sightings

I love Oktoberfest. And the Oktoberfest beer style. Some local versions are starting to crop up.

So far I've had Live Oak's and Saint Arnold's.


Real Ale's first Oktoberfest (and first lager, right?) should be hitting spots this weekend, according to their facebook page.

Have not seen or had Rahr's yet, but looking forward to it.
