Mo Allagash, No Problems

I saw this yesterday at Specs. I love that we are getting more and more of Allagash's Special Releases. I don't pick them up often, but when I do I always enjoy them.

Turkey + Beer

What are you drinking with your Thanksgiving meal. My main selection:

I'll probably even have some wine. Why not, it's a holiday.

Mostly Good

Sunday some local BeerAdvocates got together for our monthly tasting. The Flying Saucer was kind enough to host us this month. Some notable appearances:

3 year old Duvel. The crispness of a fresh bottle was long gone. What was left was fruity and musty. Muted. Interesting.

Midnight Sun Descent Imperial Abbey Ale. WTF, imperial abbey ale? Hogwash. Marketing. Still, pretty tasty. For almost 9 percent, it “drank good.”

Schlafly Reserve Barrel Aged Imperial Stout. This one reminded me a lot of the Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, but better. Others did not agree. But come on, who are you going to believe? Me, right? Bourbn-y, obviously.

Cantillon Saint Lamvinus. Cantillon never misses with me. I’m a Cantillon whore.

Allagash Victor. This is on my list cause I brought it. That’s it. It was good though.

Bell’s Third Coast Old Ale. Wow, this was my favorite. Not sure which vintage it was. It did have some age on it for sure. Delicious. Smooth, butterscotch-y, dark fruits. I want more.

Not Drinking Sucks

Remember last week when I said I had stopped drinking beer for a month or two to lose a few pounds. Yeah, that's over with.

I did not last through Thursday - I had to get some of that Ruination cask at Flying Saucer and then we zipped over to Draught House for a glass of Allagash Curieux. I have cut back a lot though. And because I am enjoying a beer here and there, I've decided to start swimming before work. So far I've gone two days straight! That is a big deal for me.

Have no fear, this is temporary. I could never keep this up forever. Well maybe, I'll see how I feel in September. Till then drink one for me.

Hyde Park Beer Hunt

I live in Hyde Park, in Austin. As you know I've been looking for those damn Allagash beers lately (see below). I've heard reports of them here and there around TX. This weekend I plan on making a trip to Grapevine. If anyone has it, I guess they would. Today I checked Hyde Park Market and Central Market.

First Hyde Park Market:

I've wanted this for awhile now. HPM had it for 15.99 bucks. Ridiculous! A whole three dollars more than most places. HPM has a good selection, but the prices are just too much to handle.

They also had this. IPA from Michigan Brewing Co. I heard nothing of this, where did they come from? Later I learned they are the same brewery who brews the Celis series. I checked around and they seem pretty well rated. Some day, not today.

Now, Central Market:

Brooklyn Local 1 - $6.99!! Obviously, a must buy.

And then I saw this. Redhook Limited Tripel. In the past, Redhook has not exactly wowed me. But I decided to give this one a shot. And surprise, surprise it's good. Well done Redhook, you got me.

No bloody Allagash though.

Fail

I failed to score any of the three Allagash beer's below. And to answer Paul's question, I have no idea if it is even available. I saw someone post on BeerAdvocate that it was in (or coming in) to Houston, I think. I just assumed it would be in Austin. Wrong, at least at the places I checked (Hyde Park Market, Central Market, HEB, Specs on Airport). Other than that, I got nothing for you.

Check out Beer Town Austin's Ginger Man post in the meantime.

To Do

High on my list of to-dos this weekend is to get one (or all three) of these beers. I think they are available now. I'll let you know if I am successful.

Allagash Hugh Malone

(photo from blogs.creativeloafing.com, I think)

It was on tap at Flying Saucer last night. I did not go. But it was tempting. They may still have some. I'll swing in after work for a peak.

WHAT A POST!
